Welcome to COST Action IS1209 – 'Comparing European Prostitution Policies: Understanding Scales and Cultures of Governance' (ProsPol)

The aim of ProsPol, COST Action IS1209, is to exchange, enhance and compare knowledge about prostitution policies across Europe. ProsPol provides an innovative platform of exchange to enhance understanding of how concepts, policies and practices transfer across national cultures and local contexts, and the implications this has for knowledge exchange and coordination in this field. By offering insight into the empirical effects and contexts of various regulatory regimes and techniques, the Action seeks to inform future prostitution research and policy, including comparative work between different prostitution policy regimes and their effects.

  • To map current prostitution-related policies, taking into account scales of governance and ranges of approaches across Europe;
  • To consider European prostitution policies in the cultural, social, economic and historical context in which they are produced;
  • To offer insights into the effects (intended and unintended) of different prostitution policy regimes and approaches;
  • To contribute to a more informed debate about prostitution regulation in Europe;
  • To provide opportunities for Early Career and Senior Researchers to engage in mutually enriching academic exchanges;
  • To advance research capacity by enabling researchers to develop collaborative work, programmes and activities;
  • To encourage and facilitate the mobility of European researchers, especially Early Career ones;
  • To submit an application for a research-based project, building on the network, knowledge, and methodological advancements developed during the Action, and utilising other European funding instruments.
